Etymology of ‘Vodka’

Vod- is the Russian word for water, and -ka makes it diminutive. The same way we in English will add -y to the end of the word (like how Bob becomes Bobby), or how, in Spanish, they will add -ito or -ita (like how señora becomes señorita).

So vodka is like a cute little nickname which can be roughly translated as ‘lil’ water’.
